Thai Herbal Pharmacopoeia (THP)

Constituents and quality criteria of Pomegranate

Summarised from the Pomegranate Peel monograph of the Thai Herbal Pharmacopoeia, Department of Medical Sciences, the standard used to test the dried pericarp.

The pharmacopoeia sets no minimum marker content for this herb. Use the raw material quality criteria below for acceptance testing.

Constituents

Pomegranate Peel contains hydrolysable tannins (e.g., punicalin and punicalagin) and phenolic acids (e.g., ellagic acid and gallic acid). It also contains alkaloids, flavonoids, etc.

The THP monograph covers the fruit peel, while the formulas mainly use the leaf, so the quality criteria on this page apply to the fruit peel only.
